I thought it would be nice to add a little harvest flavor to the daily painting offerings, as a sort of ode to autumn (probably my favorite season, although winter is nice too). So here's to cooler weather and the harvest season!
A good thing about these daily paintings is the ability to experiment with techniques and processes that you haven't really tried before. For this painting, I started out with a base layer (imprimatura) of burnt sienna. I usually start out on a toned ground, but it's almost always a warm grey, burnt umber, or some sort of grey-green. So, this was uncharted waters... sort of. I liked how the actual painting turned out, but getting the digital file to match the original was a real pain. I ended up using a layer mask technique (more uncharted waters) in Photoshop to blend two different exposures together to match the original. Happily, after much tweaking, I finally got an accurate match.
Last week I painted a single grape as a test of sorts, knowing that I was going to paint this cluster of grapes soon. The interesting thing about grapes is their translucency, and this seems to lend itself really well to oils. I'm really enjoying getting back into oil painting...
You can't beat the taste of a fresh, juicy peach, and it turns out that they make good still life subjects as well. What painting fruit has over painting landscapes is you get to eat the fruit afterward! I love 2-for-1 deals :)
This one is 4"x6" and painted on double gessoed 100% rag board.

This is the first in a new project I'm embarking on-- daily oil painting. For me, this is not necessarily going to mean I start and finish one each day, but I will be painting in oil everyday nonetheless, and will be posting new still life and landscapes on a regular basis.

I really enjoy painting landscapes and still lifes, as well as the more fantastical work, so hopefully will be posting more of these as they are painted. Actually, this one is from last year, and was painted to keep my hand both in landscapes and oils, so to speak. I've painted in acrylic often (more so than oils), but I actually prefer oils. There are advantages to both, for instance glazing goes MUCH quicker with acrylics, since they take a fraction of the time that oils take to dry. But oils just feel more organic, blend much easier than acrylics, and naturally have more depth and richness to the color.
Here are some specs...
